The Closest Beach to Orlando (and Which Ones Are Worth It with Kids)

The closest beach to Orlando is Cocoa Beach, 60 miles and 1 hour 1 minute east on the Beachline, FL-528, when we measured it, with Daytona Beach 5 minutes behind on I-4. The Gulf is the other choice, St. Pete Beach and Clearwater at about two and a half hours west, with warmer water and a longer drive. We travel slowly with young kids, so after a few days of theme parks we want a lifeguard tower near the car and an easy afternoon, and the lifeguard seasons below come from each town’s own page. Below you will find seven beaches on both coasts, ranked by the drive we measured, with the nearest NOAA sea temperature and our prices for each where we hold them.

The Short Answer

For the closest, Cocoa Beach at 1 hour 1 minute or Daytona Beach at 1 hour 6 minutes. For history and a beach, St. Augustine at 1 hour 49 minutes. For the Gulf, St. Pete Beach at 2 hours 26 minutes, Clearwater Beach at 2 hours 31 minutes or Siesta Key at 2 hours 43 minutes. For shelling, Sanibel Island at 3 hours 53 minutes.

Good to know: St. Pete Beach is the nearest Gulf beach from Orlando and has no lifeguards we could confirm. Clearwater Beach, five minutes further, is guarded all year, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which makes it the easier Gulf day with small children.

Atlantic or Gulf From Orlando

The Atlantic is an hour away. Cocoa Beach is FL-528 east, a toll road, and Daytona Beach is I-4 east, and the two finish 5 minutes apart. Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National Seashore and New Smyrna Beach are about as close too, and we have not checked their lifeguards, so they are not ranked here.

The Gulf is I-4 west through Tampa, two and a half hours or more, and the water is warmer. The Clearwater sensor averages 89.4°F in July against 85.8°F at Port Canaveral. Our Gulf coast ranking and our Florida beach towns ranking compare the towns on more than the drive.

From Disney World the numbers shift a little. We read 1 hour 10 minutes to Cocoa Beach and 2 hours 2 minutes to Clearwater Beach from the resort on the same afternoon, so the Gulf is half an hour closer from the Disney side of town than from downtown.

Good to know: In our August 8 to 15, 2026 week a three-star room in Clearwater Beach ran $149 a night at the median. Our Orlando trip cost breakdown has what the parks side of the week costs. For a winter trip, our Florida winter guide has the sea month by month.

How We Measured

Every drive time on this page was read from Google Maps directions on September 29, 2026, from Orlando, Florida (downtown, as Google Maps places it), taking the first route Maps listed. We did not use a distance model, because the one we tested under-shot every airport transfer we checked it against. We read these times on a Tuesday afternoon, so I-4 rush hour and a summer Saturday can each add a good deal to them. Prices are Booking.com three-star medians from our cost index, collected for two adults with vacation rentals removed.
