The best family hotels with pools in Wrightsville Beach are Trailborn Surf & Sound, the former Blockade Runner, and the Holiday Inn Resort Lumina. Which one fits comes down to your kids’ ages. With small children, pick the Holiday Inn Resort Lumina. Its amenities include a children’s pool and a whirlpool at the outdoor pool, three places to eat and a heated indoor pool. Trailborn has one outdoor pool beside a boardwalk to the beach, with cabanas you can book, and a Great Lawn with hammocks, lawn games and evening bonfires. Both are on the ocean. Every hotel below gets our own 1-10 rating for how genuinely relaxing it is to bring kids poolside. Not a generic star rating, but four specific things that actually matter to tired parents:
- Toddler Entry: How easy it is for small children to get in. Zero-entry pools, splash pads and shallow areas score highest.
- Lazy River: Whether there’s a lazy river or float feature, and how good it is.
- Shade Coverage: Cabanas, umbrellas, or covered areas so you’re not baking in direct sun all day.
- Lounge Chairs: How much comfortable poolside seating there actually is to relax in.
Trailborn Surf & Sound
Trailborn Surf & Sound is the old Blockade Runner Beach Resort, renovated and renamed in May 2025, and it sits directly on the ocean at 275 Waynick Boulevard. TripAdvisor reviewers give it 4.3 out of 5 across 292 reviews. Pick it for a beachfront base with lawn space and soundside outings. There is just one outdoor pool.
- What it’s like: A 151-room hotel with a Great Lawn and more than 4 acres of gardens, set up with hammocks, Adirondack chairs, lawn games and evening bonfires. Kayaks, paddleboards and harbor cruises leave from the hotel’s Soundside waterfront across Waynick Boulevard. They are for guests only and need booking ahead.
- The Pool: One outdoor pool beside the boardwalk that runs from the lobby to the beach, with loungers, towel service, cabanas you can book and the seasonal Blockade Surf Bar. It is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily unless the hotel posts otherwise, and an indoor hot tub and sauna keep the same hours. The hotel’s pages do not give the heating or the depth, and they list no shallow area or children’s pool.
- Rooms That Fit a Family: Double Queen rooms, King Junior Suites with a sleeper sofa and the Oceanfront King Suite with Balcony each sleep four. The Family Beachfront Suite sleeps six across three rooms, with a king, a queen, bunk beds, a kitchenette and two bathrooms. Rollaways and Pack ‘n Plays are limited to one per room, on request. For a reunion, the 13-bedroom Beach House next door sleeps 24 with full use of the resort.
- Walk to the Sand: The Atlantic is right there, and the boardwalk past the pool goes straight onto the beach. Downtown Wilmington is a 15-minute drive.
- Good to Know: Book the Family Adventure package with promo code FAMILY and kids under 12 eat breakfast free at La Duna Paradiso. The package adds in-room camping, a stuffed animal and a bingo board. Breakfast is not included on a regular rate.
What It Actually Costs: The resort fee is $50 a day as of October 2026. It covers a tote bag per room, lawn games, dock fishing, boogie and skim board rentals, an hour of bike rental a day and enhanced Wi-Fi. Valet parking is $30 a night, and beach chairs and umbrellas rent separately.
The Downside: A family arriving by car pays $80 a day in resort fee and valet before renting a single beach chair. TripAdvisor reviewers also mention beach chairs running short at busy times, loud air conditioning and elevator outages.
Why It Scores 5.7: Loungers and towel service at the pool make up the largest share of the score, and bookable cabanas add shade. The hotel lists no shallow area or kids’ pool, which keeps toddler entry at 4, and none of its pages mention a lazy river.
Skip It If: the dog is coming, because pets are not allowed and the hotel charges a $500 cleaning fee if one is brought in.
Holiday Inn Resort Lumina on Wrightsville Beach
Holiday Inn Resort Lumina on Wrightsville Beach is the better fit of the two for small children, with a children’s pool at its outdoor pool and a heated indoor pool for cool or rainy days. On Booking.com it holds a 9.2 out of 10 from 602 reviews. With three places to eat, a playground and a hammock garden, a family can stay put on the property.
- What it’s like: A 184-room oceanfront resort on seven floors at 1706 North Lumina Avenue, with an event lawn and a beachfront fitness center. A January 2025 third-party review lists cornhole, bocce, giant Jenga, family movie nights and craft workshops among the activities.
- The Pool: The heated indoor pool and the outdoor pool are both open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. IHG puts a children’s pool and a whirlpool at the outdoor pool, and Orbitz describes the pool as fenced with a gate. The hotel calls only the indoor pool heated. Private cabanas can be rented, and the Surfside Beach Bar & Grille serves drinks, sandwiches and salads poolside from April to September.
- Rooms That Fit a Family: Some rooms have bunk beds, most have balconies, and connecting rooms are available. The One-Bedroom King Suite adds a sofa bed. Rooms have a microwave and refrigerator but no full kitchen. Booking.com lists free cribs and extra beds at $15 a night.
- Walk to the Sand: The resort is oceanfront with its own beach access, and Johnnie Mercer’s Pier is about a 12-minute walk. Town lifeguard stands are staffed from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the town advises never swimming before the guards come on duty or after they leave.
- Good to Know: A free hotel shuttle runs trips of under 3 miles around Wrightsville Beach. That covers dinner in town, and the car can stay in the garage. IHG also lists Kids Eat Free. Ask the front desk about the age limit.
What It Actually Costs: Orbitz showed a resort fee of $33.90 a night in October 2026. It includes one space per room in the covered parking deck, beach towels, pool access and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is extra, with the buffet listed at $22 per person on Orbitz.
The Downside: Beach chairs, umbrellas and cabanas all cost extra, and the Lumina’s pages give no prices for them. One guest wrote that the garage fills up fast. Another arrived to find the indoor pool closed for renovation with a day’s notice, so if you are choosing the Lumina for that pool, call 910-256-2231.
Why It Scores 5.6: The toddler mark comes from the children’s pool. Rentable cabanas lift shade, and the lounge mark sits in the middle because the hotel gives no count of loungers.
Skip It If: you need an outdoor pool you can count on being heated in spring or fall.
