The Closest Beach to Atlanta (and Which Ones Are Worth the Drive with Kids)

The closest beach to Atlanta is Tybee Island, about four hours by car and 265 miles down I-75 S and I-16 E, a small island town at the end of the road from Savannah. The closest Gulf beach is Panama City Beach at about five hours, and the spread between the nearest and the furthest beach here is an hour and a half, so from Atlanta the question is never really the drive. It is which beach is worth the weekend. We travel slowly with kids, one thing a day and a long afternoon in the water, and a four-hour drive is a two-night trip at the least. Every drive time was read by hand from Google Maps on September 16, 2026. By the end you will know which beach is closest, which is best for small children, and which is worth the extra hour.

The Short Answer for Every Direction

East to the Atlantic, Tybee Island in about four hours, or Hilton Head Island in about four and a quarter hours for the full week. South to the Gulf, Panama City Beach in about five hours, or Destin 20 minutes further for the beach we rank first on that coast. For the quietest sand within reach, Jekyll Island on the Atlantic at four and three-quarter hours and St. George Island on the Gulf at five and a half hours. Nine beaches in all, ranked by the clock below.

⚠️ Parent Reality Check: There is no day-trip beach from Atlanta. The nearest sand is about four hours each way, which is eight hours in the car for an afternoon on the beach. Every entry below is written as a weekend or a week, and the playbook at the bottom is about making the drive part of the trip rather than the price of it.

Beaches Near Atlanta, Ranked by Drive Time

Drive times are the fastest route Google Maps showed on September 16, 2026, read by hand, and they are the ordinary-evening version of the road. A Friday afternoon in July adds an hour to any of them. Lifeguard details are from each town’s own lifeguard service or park page, checked in September 2026.

1. Tybee Island, about four hours

The default, and a good one. The closest beach to Atlanta and the easiest, a small island town at the end of the road from Savannah with a wide flat beach, a pier and a pavilion in the middle of it, and a lighthouse to climb. Tybee Island Ocean Rescue staffs four towers from May 1 to October 31, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the south end sandbar is off limits because of fast currents. The town is walkable once you have parked, and Savannah is twenty minutes back up the road for a rainy day. Parking is paid everywhere on the island, which is the one honest complaint.

Plan it with the Tybee Island beaches guide or our Tybee Island activities guide.

2. Hilton Head Island, about four and a quarter hours

The one we would pick for a full week. Twelve minutes further than Tybee and a different kind of trip. Hilton Head is twelve miles of flat, hard-packed sand that a child can ride a bicycle on at low tide, sixty miles of separated bike paths behind it, and a rental market that undercuts its own hotels in three seasons out of four in our index. It is the best week on this list for a family, and the worst day trip, because nothing about it is built for an afternoon.

Plan it with the Hilton Head Island beaches guide, our Hilton Head Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

3. St. Simons Island, about four and three-quarter hours

The village with a beach. The Golden Isles’ town island, with a pier village of restaurants and a lighthouse at one end and East Beach at the other, where the sand is wide and Coast Guard Beach has lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It is more town than Jekyll and less resort than Hilton Head, which for a family that wants dinner out and a beach in the morning is the right balance. The causeway from Brunswick puts Jekyll fifteen minutes away for a second beach.

Plan it with the St. Simons Island beaches guide or our St. Simons Island activities guide.

4. Jekyll Island, about four and three-quarter hours

The quiet one, with no lifeguards we could confirm. A state park island with a gate fee per car, which keeps it quiet, and a beach that is flat, wide and empty. Driftwood Beach at the north end is the photograph, the sea turtle center is the outing, and the paved bike loop around the island is the way a family gets about. There is no town to speak of, so the week is the beach, the bikes and the pool, which is the point. We could not confirm lifeguards on any Jekyll beach, so an adult stays in the water.

Plan it with the Jekyll Island beaches guide, our Jekyll Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

5. Panama City Beach, about five hours

The closest Gulf beach, and the busiest. The first Gulf beach you can reach from Atlanta, and the reason Atlanta families drive south instead of east. The sand is sugar white, the water is emerald and warm, and St. Andrews State Park at the east end has the jetties and Grand Lagoon for paddling. The city patrols the beach year round and staffs its pier from April to September. It is also the busiest town on this list and the college spring break town, so book the east end and avoid mid-March.

Plan it with the Panama City Beach beaches guide or our Panama City Beach activities guide.

6. Pensacola Beach, about five and a quarter hours

The quieter Panhandle answer. A barrier island with the national seashore on both ends, free lots at two of its accesses in our records, and the same white sand as Destin with fewer people on it. The National Naval Aviation Museum across the bay is free and is the best rainy day on the Panhandle. Seventeen minutes further than Panama City Beach and a calmer week for it.

Plan it with the Pensacola Beach beaches guide or our Pensacola Beach activities guide.

7. Destin, about five and a quarter hours

The best Gulf beach for families, if you can add twenty minutes. The town we rank first on the whole Florida Gulf coast for families. Destin Beach Safety runs lifeguard chairs and patrols in season, and James Lee Park has a free lot with a playground. It is twenty minutes past Panama City Beach on the clock and a better week in every other way.

Plan it with the Destin beaches guide, our Destin activities guide or our family hotels guide.

8. Gulf Shores, about five and a half hours

The town at the top of our most affordable beach towns ranking. Alabama’s beach, which most Atlanta families have never considered and should. It sits first in our ranking of the most affordable family beach towns, the sand is the same white quartz as the Florida Panhandle next door, and Gulf State Park with its pier and its paved trails is the outing. It is nearly the furthest drive on this list and the least expensive week at the end of it.

Plan it with the Gulf Shores beaches guide, our Gulf Shores activities guide, our family hotels guide or our most affordable beach towns ranking.

9. St. George Island, about five and a half hours

The quiet island, for a family that wants nothing to do. The Forgotten Coast’s island, with no high-rises, no chains, nine miles of state park beach at one end and a lighthouse in the middle. The state park says lifeguards are not provided and we found none elsewhere on the island, so it is a swim-with-the-adults beach, and the rental houses are the lodging. It is the longest drive here and the emptiest sand, and for the right family that trade is the whole point.

Plan it with the St. George Island beaches guide, our St. George Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

The Lazy Parent’s Playbook for a Four-Hour Drive

Leave on Friday after school, not Saturday morning. A drive of four hours that starts at three in the afternoon ends at the beach in time to see it before dark, which is the only way the first night counts. Eat dinner on the road and put the children to bed on arrival. Saturday and Sunday are then two full beach days, and the drive home on Sunday afternoon is a nap.

The Atlantic beaches share one road, I-75 to Macon and I-16 to Savannah, and I-16 is the emptiest interstate in the South, so fill the tank and the snack bag in Macon. The Gulf beaches split the other way, down I-85 and the Alabama highways, and the towns along the route are small, so the same rule applies. Two stops, not five, and one of them a playground.

🦣 Lazy Parent Tip: For a week rather than a weekend, Hilton Head Island on the Atlantic and Destin on the Gulf are the two we would choose from Atlanta, and both are within twenty minutes of the nearest beach in their direction. The extra minutes buy a town built for a family week, which the closest beach in each direction does not have in the same measure.

How We Measured

Google Maps directions, fastest route, read by hand on the evening of 2026-09-16. Times are the route Google showed for a normal evening, not a Friday afternoon. The origin is Atlanta, GA (downtown, as Google Maps places it). We did not use a distance model, because the one we tested under-shot every airport transfer it was asked about, and we did not use the times other guides publish. If your part of the metro is north of the city, add half an hour to the Atlantic beaches and forty minutes to the Gulf ones.
