The Closest Beach to Nashville (and Which Ones Are Worth the Drive with Kids)

The closest beach to Nashville is Pensacola Beach, about seven hours by car and 451 miles down I-65 S, through Birmingham and Montgomery. The four Gulf beaches behind it on the clock are all within twenty-one minutes of it, so from Nashville the drive does not choose the beach, and Destin, the one we rank first on that coast for families, is only six minutes further. We travel slowly with kids, one thing a day and a long afternoon in the water, and a seven-hour drive is a week rather than a weekend. Every drive time was read by hand from Google Maps on September 16, 2026. By the end you will know which beach is closest, which is best for small children, which coast is worth the extra hour, and how to make the drive part of the trip.

The Short Answer for Every Direction

South to the Gulf, Pensacola Beach in about seven hours, or Destin six minutes further for the beach we rank first on that coast. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, the Alabama beach, are about seven and a quarter hours, and Panama City Beach is the same on the clock by a different last hour of road. East to the Atlantic, Tybee Island in about eight hours, or Hilton Head Island fifteen minutes further for the full week. Eight beaches in all, ranked by the clock below.

⚠️ Parent Reality Check: There is no weekend beach from Nashville, let alone a day trip. The nearest sand is about seven hours each way, which is fourteen hours in the car for two nights on the beach. Every entry below is written as a week, or four nights at the least, and the playbook at the bottom is about making the drive part of the trip rather than the price of it.

Beaches Near Nashville, Ranked by Drive Time

Drive times are the fastest route Google Maps showed on September 16, 2026, read by hand, and they are the ordinary-evening version of the road. A Friday afternoon in July adds an hour to any of them. Lifeguard details are from each town’s own lifeguard service or park page, checked in September 2026.

1. Pensacola Beach, about seven hours

The closest, and a good one. The first sand a Nashville family reaches, a barrier island with the Gulf Islands National Seashore on both ends and the same white quartz sand as Destin next door. Casino Beach in the middle of town has a lifeguard stand and a playground in our records, two of the four accesses have free lots, and the National Naval Aviation Museum across the bay is free and is the best rainy day on the whole Panhandle. It is quieter than Destin and less built up than Panama City Beach, and for a first Gulf trip from Tennessee it is the easy answer.

Plan it with the Pensacola Beach beaches guide or our Pensacola Beach activities guide.

2. Destin, about seven hours

The beach we rank first on the Gulf, six minutes further. The town we rank first on the whole Florida Gulf coast for families, and from Nashville it costs six minutes more than the closest beach. Destin Beach Safety runs lifeguard chairs and patrols in season, and James Lee Park has a free lot with a playground. It is the same mileage as Pensacola Beach on a different last hour of road, and a better week in every way that matters with children.

Plan it with the Destin beaches guide, our Destin activities guide or our family hotels guide.

3. Orange Beach, about seven and a quarter hours

The quieter half of Alabama’s beach. The east end of the same strip of sand as Gulf Shores, with Gulf State Park between the two towns and Perdido Pass at the far end. The city staffs lifeguard towers at six public accesses from March to October, Cotton Bayou and Romar Beach among them, Alabama Point has the dunes and the wide shoreline, and the Wharf has the ferris wheel and the evening. It is condo country rather than hotel country, so the rental sites are the way to book it, and it is two minutes closer to Nashville than Gulf Shores on the clock, which is to say the same drive.

Plan it with the Orange Beach beaches guide or our Orange Beach activities guide.

4. Gulf Shores, about seven and a quarter hours

The town at the top of our most affordable beach towns ranking. Alabama’s beach, straight down I-65 with no turn to remember, and the one that sits first in our ranking of the most affordable family beach towns. The public beach at the foot of the highway has a lifeguard stand and a pavilion, the sand is the same white quartz as the Florida Panhandle next door, and Gulf State Park with its pier, its paved trails and its lake is the outing. It is the least expensive of the three towns on this list that our index prices, in all four of its weeks, and one of the easiest drives, and the only reason it is fourth rather than first is that Pensacola Beach and Destin are on the clock before it.

Plan it with the Gulf Shores beaches guide, our Gulf Shores activities guide, our family hotels guide or our most affordable beach towns ranking.

5. Panama City Beach, about seven and a quarter hours

The busiest, with the most to do off the sand. The same twenty-one minutes past the closest beach as Gulf Shores, and a very different town. The sand is sugar white, the water is emerald and warm, and St. Andrews State Park at the east end has the jetties and Grand Lagoon for paddling. The city patrols the beach year round and staffs its pier from April to September. It is also the busiest town on this list and the college spring break town, so book the east end and avoid mid-March. Our free things list for the town covers a week of days that cost nothing once you have paid for the drive.

Plan it with the Panama City Beach beaches guide or our Panama City Beach activities guide.

6. Tybee Island, about eight hours

The closest Atlantic beach, nearly an hour past the Gulf. The first Atlantic sand from Nashville, through Chattanooga, Atlanta and Savannah rather than down through Alabama, and nearly an hour further on the clock than the closest Gulf beach. It is a small island town with a wide flat beach, a pier and pavilion in the middle of it, a lighthouse to climb and Savannah twenty minutes back up the road for a rainy day. Parking is paid everywhere on the island, and the Atlantic water is browner and rougher than the Gulf, which for a family choosing between the two coasts is the honest difference.

Plan it with the Tybee Island beaches guide or our Tybee Island activities guide.

7. Hilton Head Island, about eight and a quarter hours

The one we would pick for a full Atlantic week. Fifteen minutes past Tybee and a different kind of trip. Hilton Head is twelve miles of flat, hard-packed sand that a child can ride a bicycle on at low tide, sixty miles of separated bike paths behind it, and a rental market that undercuts its own hotels in three seasons out of four in our index. It is the best Atlantic week on this list for a family, and at more than eight hours from Nashville it is a week or nothing.

Plan it with the Hilton Head Island beaches guide, our Hilton Head Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

8. Jekyll Island, about eight and a half hours

The quiet one, with no lifeguards we could confirm, if the drive is split in two. A state park island with a gate fee per car, which keeps it quiet, and a beach that is flat, wide and empty. Driftwood Beach at the north end is the photograph, the sea turtle center is the outing, and the paved bike loop around the island is the way a family gets about. It is the furthest drive on this list, and the right way to do it from Nashville is a night in Atlanta or Macon on the way down, which turns the longest drive here into two short ones. We could not confirm lifeguards on any Jekyll beach, so an adult stays in the water.

Plan it with the Jekyll Island beaches guide, our Jekyll Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

The Lazy Parent’s Playbook for a Seven-Hour Drive

Leave at five in the morning, not after school. A drive of seven hours that starts at five is on the sand by early afternoon with the whole day’s light left, and a child carried to the car asleep will sleep to Birmingham. Leaving on a Friday afternoon puts you into Nashville’s own traffic first and into the beach town near midnight, which is a lost night at a beach price.

Every Gulf beach here is one road, I-65 south through Birmingham and Montgomery, and the split comes late, at the bottom of Alabama, so the first five hours are the same whichever beach you chose. Stop once in Birmingham and once in Montgomery, and make the Montgomery stop a playground rather than a drive-through. The Atlantic beaches go the other way, I-24 to Chattanooga and I-75 through Atlanta, and Atlanta’s traffic is the reason to leave early on that road too.

For the Atlantic, or for Jekyll Island at about eight and a half hours, split it. A night in Atlanta or Macon on the way down turns the longest drive on this list into two short ones, the children get a hotel pool on a travel day, and you arrive at the beach in the morning rather than the dark.

🦣 Lazy Parent Tip: For a week, Destin on the Gulf and Hilton Head Island on the Atlantic are the two we would choose from Nashville. Destin is six minutes past the closest beach and runs a seasonal beach safety patrol. Hilton Head Island is fifteen minutes past Tybee Island and is the best Atlantic week on this list for a family. Neither is the closest beach, and both are worth the minutes.

How We Measured

Google Maps directions, fastest route, read by hand on the evening of 2026-09-16. Times are the route Google showed for a normal evening, not a Friday afternoon. The origin is Nashville, TN (downtown, as Google Maps places it). We did not use a distance model, because the one we tested under-shot every airport transfer it was asked about, and we did not use the times other guides publish. From Franklin or Brentwood take twenty minutes off the Gulf times. From Hendersonville or Gallatin add them back.
