The Closest Beach to Dallas (and Which Ones Are Worth the Drive with Kids)

The closest beach to Dallas is Galveston, about four and a half hours by car and 289 miles down I-45 through Houston, and the only beach on this list that works as a weekend. The rest of the Texas coast is a day’s drive, Corpus Christi and Port Aransas at six and a quarter and six and three-quarter hours, South Padre Island at eight and a half, and the white sand of the Alabama and Florida Panhandle starts about ten hours away. We travel slowly with kids, one thing a day and a long afternoon in the water, and from Dallas that means choosing between the near beach and the pretty one. Every drive time was read by hand from Google Maps on September 17, 2026. By the end you will know which beach is closest, which suits small children, and how far the clear water is.

The Short Answer for Every Direction

For a weekend, Galveston, about four and a half hours down I-45. For a Texas week with clearer water, Corpus Christi or Port Aransas at six and a quarter and six and three-quarter hours down I-35, or South Padre Island at eight and a half hours for the clearest water in the state. For the white sand, Gulf Shores at ten hours across I-20, Pensacola Beach five minutes further, and Destin, the beach we rank first on the Gulf, at eleven hours. Seven beaches in all, ranked by the clock below.

⚠️ Parent Reality Check: There is no day-trip beach from Dallas. Galveston is about four and a half hours each way, which is nine hours in the car for an afternoon on the sand, and every other beach here is a full day’s drive or more. Galveston is written below as a weekend and the rest as a week, and the playbook at the bottom is about the two very different drives.

Beaches Near Dallas, Ranked by Drive Time

Drive times are the fastest route Google Maps showed on September 17, 2026, read by hand, and they are the weekday-afternoon version of the road. A Friday evening in July adds an hour to any of them, and Houston can add one on its own. Lifeguard details are from each town’s own lifeguard service or park page, checked in September 2026.

1. Galveston, about four and a half hours

The closest, the least expensive, and the only weekend beach. The closest beach to Dallas and the only one that works as a weekend, one road all the way down I-45 through Houston. Stewart Beach has a playground in our records and lifeguards from Memorial Day to Labor Day, when the beach patrol guards the Gulf front from East Beach to 61st Street, and the town behind the seawall has more built for children than any other on the Texas coast, Moody Gardens’ three pyramids, a water park and the Pleasure Pier over the Gulf. The water is brown, which is silt and not dirt, and the August hotel median is the lowest of any beach town in our index, so a family that can live with the color gets the best value on this list.

Plan it with the Galveston beaches guide, our Galveston activities guide or our family hotels guide.

2. Corpus Christi, about six and a quarter hours

The city base, with the aquarium and the indoor pools. A city with a bay beach and a lot to do off it. North Beach sits beside the Texas State Aquarium with free parking in our records and a lifeguard patrol on summer weekends, McGee Beach on the downtown seawall has a lifeguard tower every day from late May to early September, and the USS Lexington is an aircraft carrier a child can climb through. Two of the four hotels in our records have indoor pools, which no other Texas town on this list can say, and Padre Island National Seashore is half an hour across the causeway for the day you want empty sand, though it has no lifeguards.

Plan it with the Corpus Christi beaches guide, our Corpus Christi activities guide or our family hotels guide.

3. Port Aransas, about six and three-quarter hours

The quiet island, with the car on the sand. Half an hour past Corpus Christi and a different kind of week. The car goes onto the beach with a town permit, the sand runs for miles, Mustang Island State Park has the dunes and San Jose Island across the channel has the best shells on the coast, reached by a short ferry. The city guards the beach between Marker D and Marker 9 every day in summer and on fall weekends to Halloween, and beyond that it is a swim-with-the-adults beach, and Port Royal’s lagoon pool with its slides and splash pad is where the small children spend the afternoon. It is the Texas coast at its most unhurried.

Plan it with the Port Aransas beaches guide, our Port Aransas activities guide or our family hotels guide.

4. South Padre Island, about eight and a half hours

The clearest water in Texas, and a full day’s drive to reach it. The far end of the state, where the Gulf turns green and clear and the winter is the warmest of the Texas towns we price. The city beaches have a mobile patrol rather than lifeguard stands, so an adult stays in the water, Sea Turtle, Inc. is the outing, and the Pearl’s lagoon pool has the shallow end. It is a week, never a weekend, from Dallas, and it is the spring break island, so the mid-March week is its most expensive in our index and the one to avoid with children.

Plan it with the South Padre Island beaches guide, our South Padre Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.

5. Gulf Shores, about ten hours

The first white sand, and the top of our most affordable ranking. The first of the white-quartz beaches east of Texas, and the first place the water looks like the photographs. It is ten hours from Dallas across Louisiana and Mississippi, which makes it a week with a night on the road, and it sits first in our ranking of the most affordable family beach towns, with the lowest hotel median of any Panhandle town we price. The city guards three public swimming areas from March to October, Gulf State Park has the pier and the paved trails, and Turquoise Place has an indoor pool and a lazy river for the afternoon storm.

Plan it with the Gulf Shores beaches guide, our Gulf Shores activities guide, our family hotels guide or our most affordable beach towns ranking.

6. Pensacola Beach, about ten and a quarter hours

The first Florida beach, five minutes past Alabama. Five minutes further than Gulf Shores on the clock and the first Florida sand from Dallas, a barrier island with the Gulf Islands National Seashore on both ends. Casino Beach has lifeguards from mid-April to September and a playground, two of the four accesses have free lots, and the National Naval Aviation Museum across the bay is free and is the best rainy day on the Panhandle. It is quieter than Destin and less built up than Panama City Beach, and for a Dallas family making the long drive once, it is the easy first Florida week.

Plan it with the Pensacola Beach beaches guide or our Pensacola Beach activities guide.

7. Destin, about eleven hours

The beach we rank first on the Gulf, eleven hours away. The town we rank first on the whole Florida Gulf coast for families, and the furthest drive on this list. Destin Beach Safety runs lifeguard chairs and patrols in season, and James Lee Park has a free lot with a playground. From Dallas it is a two-day drive or a flight, and for a family that wants the emerald water once, it is the one to fly to.

Plan it with the Destin beaches guide, our Destin activities guide or our family hotels guide.

The Lazy Parent’s Playbook for a Four-Hour Drive

Leave for Galveston on Friday after school, but not at three. The whole drive is I-45, and I-45 goes through the middle of Houston, so a car that reaches the north side of the city at six sits in the worst traffic in Texas. Leave at one, with lunch in the car, or leave at seven and put the children to bed on arrival. Either way the drive is four and a half hours on a good run and an hour more through Houston at the wrong time, and Saturday and Sunday are two full beach days.

The Coastal Bend and South Padre go the other way, down I-35 through Austin and San Antonio, which is the same lesson with two cities instead of one. Stop once south of Austin and once south of San Antonio, and make the second stop a playground rather than a drive-through. These are one-day drives with a long afternoon at the end, so leave at five in the morning and arrive with light left.

The white sand is a different trip. Gulf Shores, Pensacola Beach and Destin are ten hours to eleven hours across Louisiana and Mississippi on I-20, and the honest advice is to split it with a night in Jackson or Hattiesburg, or to fly. A family that wants the emerald water once should treat it as a week and a flight rather than a drive, and a family that wants it every summer should read our Panhandle ranking and pick the town before the road.

🦣 Lazy Parent Tip: For a weekend, Galveston, and book the room with the pool for the middle of the day, because August on the Texas coast is hot. For a week in Texas, South Padre Island for the water or Corpus Christi for a toddler and the indoor pools, and our ranking of the Texas beach towns for families has the four towns compared. For the water in the photographs, Destin, and make it a flight.

How We Measured

Google Maps directions, fastest route, read by hand on the afternoon of 2026-09-17. Times are the route Google showed for a weekday afternoon, not a Friday evening. The origin is Dallas, TX (downtown, as Google Maps places it). We did not use a distance model, because the one we tested under-shot every airport transfer it was asked about, and we did not use the times other guides publish. From Plano, Frisco or McKinney add twenty minutes to everything. From Arlington or Fort Worth the Galveston time is about the same and the I-35 beaches are twenty minutes closer.
