The closest beach to Charlotte is Myrtle Beach, about three and three-quarter hours by car and 176 miles down US-501, and it is barely the closest. Seven more beaches sit within about half an hour of it on the clock, on three different roads, which makes Charlotte the one city we cover where the drive does not choose the beach at all. We travel slowly with kids, one thing a day and a long afternoon in the water, and from Charlotte a Friday-night departure puts a family on the sand by bedtime at any of the first eight. Every drive time was read by hand from Google Maps on September 17, 2026. By the end you will know which beach is closest, which suits small children, which is worth the week, and which road to take for each.
The Short Answer for Every Direction
For the most to do, Myrtle Beach in about three and three-quarter hours down US-501. For Charleston and a beach in the same weekend, Isle of Palms or Folly Beach, four minutes and six minutes further down I-77 and I-26. For North Carolina, Wrightsville Beach at three and three-quarter hours out US-74, the same clock as Folly Beach. For the quietest sand, Pawleys Island and Edisto Beach, both about four hours. For a full week, Hilton Head Island at four and a quarter hours down I-77 and I-95. Ten beaches in all, ranked by the clock below.
Beaches Near Charlotte, Ranked by Drive Time
Drive times are the fastest route Google Maps showed on September 17, 2026, read by hand, and they are the weekday-afternoon version of the road. A Friday evening in July adds an hour to any of them, and the last stretch of US-501 into Myrtle Beach adds one on its own. Lifeguard details are from each town’s own lifeguard service or park page, checked in September 2026.

1. Myrtle Beach, about three and three-quarter hours
The closest, and the most built for a family. The closest beach to Charlotte and the one with the most for children, sixty miles of sand, with fifty lifeguard towers along North Myrtle Beach, ten stations at Surfside from mid-June to mid-August, lifeguards on the north section of the state park, and playgrounds at the state park and Surfside. The boardwalk, the SkyWheel and the water parks fill the days the sand does not, and the town is priced in our index in every season, with the late-October rate close to half of August’s. It is also the busiest beach on this list by a distance, so book the quieter ends, Surfside to the south or North Myrtle, and treat the middle as the outing rather than the base.
Plan it with the Myrtle Beach beaches guide, our Myrtle Beach activities guide or our family hotels guide.
2. Isle of Palms, about three and three-quarter hours
Charleston’s family beach, four minutes further. Four minutes further than Myrtle Beach on the clock and a different kind of week, a barrier island of rental houses twenty minutes from Charleston. The county park at the front of the island has seasonal county lifeguards, a playground and the showers, and it is the one guarded access of the four in our records, so it is where a family with small children sets up. The rest of the island spreads out along the walkovers, and Charleston is the rainy day, the aquarium and the carriage rides, closer than any city on this list to any beach.
Plan it with the Isle of Palms beaches guide or our Isle of Palms activities guide.
3. Wrightsville Beach, about three and three-quarter hours
The North Carolina answer, on the same clock. The closest North Carolina beach, straight out US-74 to Wilmington, and the same clock as the Charleston beaches. The town staffs fourteen lifeguard stands along about four miles of beach from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, and the pier at Johnnie Mercers is the landmark. The honest warning is the parking, metered at every public space in season, so a rental within walking distance is the whole trick. Wilmington is ten minutes back over the bridge with a riverwalk, a battleship and a free fort at the end of the peninsula for the days off the sand.
Plan it with the Wrightsville Beach beaches guide, our Wrightsville Beach activities guide, our family hotels guide or our free things to do list.
4. Folly Beach, about three and three-quarter hours
The surf town, with one organised family beach. Charleston’s other beach, the same drive as Isle of Palms and a looser, scruffier town with a surf break and a thousand-foot pier. The county park at the west end is the family-organised stretch, with seasonal county lifeguards, showers and rentals, and it is the beach for the youngest, swimming in the designated area and never in the river beside it. The county guards the pier too. The Washout is for watching the surfers, the pier is the walk, and the east end is the marsh and the shorebirds. It suits a family with older children and a taste for a town with character rather than a resort.
Plan it with the Folly Beach beaches guide or our Folly Beach activities guide.
5. Pawleys Island, about four hours
The quiet one, with no lifeguards at all. The unhurried island south of Myrtle Beach, rental houses and hammocks rather than hotels, with a wide beach that stays uncrowded. The town says no lifeguards are on duty at any time, so it is a swim-with-the-adults beach, and the crabbing docks on the creek side behind the island are the afternoon. Huntington Beach State Park is a short drive north for three miles of empty sand and a castle, and has no lifeguards either. Brookgreen Gardens across the road is the rainy day.
Plan it with the Pawleys Island beaches guide, our Pawleys Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.
6. Edisto Beach, about four hours
The old-fashioned one, houses and a state park. The beach town that has not changed, an hour south of Charleston, with rental houses fronting the sand, no hotels to speak of and a state park at one end with some of the best shelling in South Carolina. The state park says there are no lifeguards on duty, and we found none on the town beach either, and Botany Bay’s boneyard beach of dead trees is the walk everyone photographs. It is a rental-house week for a family that wants the beach and nothing else, and for that family it is the least resort-shaped week on this list.
Plan it with the Edisto Beach beaches guide or our Edisto Beach activities guide.
7. Kiawah Island, about four hours
The resort island, with one public park. A private resort island with one public beach, Beachwalker Park at the west end, which has seasonal county lifeguards, the showers and the hard-packed sand a child can ride a bicycle on at low tide. Everything else on Kiawah is behind a gate and reached by renting inside it, which is the point and the price. For a family that books the resort it is the most polished week on this list, with thirty miles of bike paths and the naturalist programs, and for a family that does not, it is a day at the county park and the drive back to Charleston.
Plan it with the Kiawah Island beaches guide, our Kiawah Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.
8. Hilton Head Island, about four and a quarter hours
The one we would pick for a full week. Half an hour past Myrtle Beach on the clock and the best week on this list for a family. The town stations lifeguards at five designated swimming areas from April through September, Coligny Beach Park among them with the playground and a free lot, Fish Haul has a second free lot but is not a designated swimming area, and the sand is hard-packed enough at low tide to ride a bicycle down twelve miles of it, with sixty miles of separated bike paths behind. It is priced in our index in all four seasons, below the August median, and its rental market undercuts its own hotels in three seasons out of four. Nothing about it is built for a weekend, which is why it is a week.
Plan it with the Hilton Head Island beaches guide, our Hilton Head Island activities guide or our family hotels guide.
9. Tybee Island, about four and three-quarter hours
Savannah’s beach, an hour past Myrtle. The first Georgia sand, an hour further than Myrtle Beach on the clock, a small island town at the end of the road from Savannah with a pier and pavilion, a lighthouse to climb and four lifeguard towers staffed from May through October. North Beach by the lighthouse is the beach we rank first in Georgia for families, with a lifeguard tower and a playground. Parking is paid everywhere on the island, and Savannah is twenty minutes back up the road for the rainy day, which for a family that wants a city and a beach in the same week is the reason to drive the extra hour.
Plan it with the Tybee Island beaches guide or our Tybee Island activities guide.
10. Kitty Hawk, about five and three-quarter hours
The Outer Banks, a different trip at nearly six hours. The far end of this list and a different coast, the Outer Banks, more than an hour past every other beach here and two hours past Myrtle Beach, reached across the whole width of the state. Kitty Hawk and its neighbors staff lifeguard stands from Memorial Day into September, the sand is wide and golden, Jockey’s Ridge and the Wright Brothers memorial are next door, and the August hotel median is the highest of the priced towns on this list. It is a week, never a weekend, from Charlotte, and it is the beach a family drives to when it wants dunes and a wilder Atlantic rather than a boardwalk.
Plan it with the Kitty Hawk beaches guide, our Kitty Hawk activities guide or our family hotels guide.
The Lazy Parent’s Playbook for a Four-Hour Drive
Leave on Friday after school, not Saturday morning. A drive of three and three-quarter hours that starts at three ends at the beach in time to see it before dark, which is the only way the first night counts. Eat dinner on the road and put the children to bed on arrival. Saturday and Sunday are then two full beach days, and the drive home on Sunday afternoon is a nap.
Pick the road by the beach. US-501 to Myrtle Beach is a two-lane crawl for its last hour on a summer Friday, so leave by two or accept the queue. I-77 and I-26 to the Charleston beaches are interstate the whole way and the easiest drive on this list. US-74 to Wrightsville Beach is the quiet road east with nothing on it but Lumberton, so fill the tank and the snack bag before you leave. I-77 and I-95 to Hilton Head Island and Tybee Island are the long straight run south, with the I-95 exits as the stops.
For a week rather than a weekend, Hilton Head Island at four and a quarter hours is the one we would choose, thirty-one minutes past the closest beach and built for seven nights in a way Myrtle Beach is not. Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks at five and three-quarter hours are the other week, and a different coast, so read our Outer Banks decision guide before you pick the town.
How We Measured
Google Maps directions, fastest route, read by hand on the afternoon of 2026-09-17. Times are the route Google showed for a weekday afternoon, not a Friday evening. The origin is Charlotte, NC (downtown, as Google Maps places it). We did not use a distance model, because the one we tested under-shot every airport transfer it was asked about, and we did not use the times other guides publish. From Huntersville or Concord add fifteen minutes to everything. From Rock Hill or Fort Mill take fifteen off the South Carolina beaches and add them to Wrightsville Beach.
