The Most Affordable Family Beach Vacations in the US

Galveston, TX is the most affordable family beach vacation in the US right now, at a median $136 a night for a kid-friendly three-star hotel, or $952 for seven nights. That figure comes from 107 hotel rates across 13 beach towns in August 2026, and the gap at the other end is larger than we expected. Sanibel Island, FL runs $315 a night, so the same week costs about $1,253 more for a family doing more or less the same thing. We are slow travelers by preference, booking one real activity a day and letting the hotel pool handle the rest, so the nightly rate does more work in our planning than any attraction list. By the end you will know which towns are genuinely affordable, and which ones only look expensive until you see how far the floor sits below the median.

The 13 Most Affordable Family Beach Vacations, Ranked

Every figure below is a median nightly rate for family-suitable three-star hotels, from Google Hotels for an August 2026 week. We use medians, not averages, so one expensive resort cannot drag a whole town’s number upward.

The Number That Matters More Than the Ranking

Ranking towns by median price answers the wrong question for most families. You are not booking the median hotel. You are booking one specific hotel on one specific week, and in some towns that choice moves the price far more than picking a different town would.

The gap between a town’s median and its lowest available rate is the part worth paying attention to. In Myrtle Beach, SC the median is $163 but the floor is $78, so a family willing to compare a few properties saves $595 across a week. That is a bigger saving than moving from Hilton Head Island, SC down to Galveston, TX.

TownMedianLowestSaved per nightSaved per week
Myrtle Beach, SC$163$78$85$595
Galveston, TX$136$87$49$343
Hilton Head Island, SC$177$114$63$441
Virginia Beach, VA$218$146$72$504
Destin, FL$182$125$57$399
San Diego, CA$191$133$58$406
🦥 Lazy Parent Tip: In these six towns, comparing four or five properties is worth more than changing your destination, so start with the town you actually want and shop hard inside it.

Where the Least Expensive Week Actually Is

Galveston, TX takes the top spot at $952 for seven nights, and it is a genuine beach week rather than a technicality. Amelia Island, FL follows at $1,001 on the Atlantic, then Clearwater Beach, FL at $1,043 on the Gulf.

Myrtle Beach, SC deserves a specific mention. Its median of $163 places it 5th, which undersells it, because its floor of $78 is the lowest single rate in the entire set. It is the town on this list where the floor sits furthest below the median, 52% under it, so the most affordable option and the typical option feel like different trips.

The Towns Where Shopping Around Saves Little

Four towns barely move no matter how long you shop. Key West, FL sits at a $174 median against a $166 floor, a difference of $8 a night. Clearwater Beach, FL, Ogunquit, ME and Amelia Island, FL behave the same way.

That is useful in both directions. It means you can book early in these towns without the nagging feeling that a better rate is hiding somewhere, and it means a budget that does not fit on your first look is not going to start fitting later.

⚠️ Parent Reality Check: These are lodging rates only. Food, parking and paid attractions can add a good deal to a family week, and the towns with the lowest rooms are not automatically the towns with the lowest everything else.

How We Got These Numbers

We captured 107 individual nightly rates from Google Hotels for the week of August 8 to 15, 2026, filtered to family-suitable properties, for two adults in a standard room. We then kept the three-star tier only, which is the level where a pool and a breakfast are normal rather than a luxury, and took the median for each town. A town needs at least four of those in-town rates before we publish a median, because with fewer a single hotel sets the whole number. Siesta Key, Gulf Shores, Cape May, Kitty Hawk, Chatham, Provincetown, Asbury Park, St. George Island, Mackinac Island, Coronado and Santa Monica did not reach that, so they are left out of the ranking rather than priced on thin data.

Rates move. These are August 2026 figures and they are a snapshot, not a promise. What holds steadier than the exact numbers is the shape, which is the ordering of towns and the size of the gap between a town’s median and its floor.
