3 US Beach Towns That Are Still Warm in January

Three of the 24 US beach towns we price average 70°F or better in late January, and all three are in Florida. Key West is the warmest at 75.8°F, and Sanibel Island is the one to write down, because it clears the line at 75.0°F while its median three-star room that same week is $338 a night against $387 in Key West. Unlike our December list, every price here was collected for the exact week the temperature describes, January 23 to 30, 2027. We travel slowly with kids, one thing a day and a long afternoon in the water, and in January the whole trip turns on whether the water part is real. By the end you will know which three towns are warm, which eleven are pleasant but not swimmable, and why the lowest January rates in the country belong to beaches nobody can use.

The 3 Towns That Clear 70°F in Late January

Seventy degrees is the line the cost index uses for beach weather. In the last week of January only three of our 24 coastal towns are above it, and every one is in Florida. Key West, Sanibel Island and Siesta Key make the list. In December there were five, and Clearwater Beach has slipped to 69.8°F and South Padre Island has slipped to 68.3°F by the end of January, so they are off the swimming list for this week even though both stay pleasant.

Sanibel Island, FL75.0°F$338 a night$2,366Check rates
Siesta Key, FL72.5°FNot enough rates to price—Check rates

Siesta Key is warm enough but carries too few three-star rates in that week to publish a median, so it is listed without a price rather than with a number built on two hotels. Sanibel Island costs $49 a night less than Key West for a 0.8 degree difference in the afternoon high, which over seven nights is $343 that can go on a boat trip instead.

Eleven Towns in the Sixties, Pleasant but Not for Swimming

Eleven towns sit between 60°F and 70°F in the last week of January. That is a jacket in the morning and sandals by lunch, a good week for a long walk on the sand, a pier and an aquarium, and not a week to promise the children the sea.

Clearwater Beach is the near miss worth knowing about. It averages 69.8°F that week, 5.2 degrees short of Sanibel Island, at $254 a night, which is roughly 75 percent of the Sanibel Island rate. A family that can live with the water being cool has the best deal on this page there. South Padre Island sits at 68.3°F and Coronado at 66.4°F, and South Padre Island at $127 is the more affordable of the two by a wide margin.

🦣 Lazy Parent Tip: A high of 69.8°F on a Florida beach in January is a good day. The same number for the sea is not. Air temperatures are what we hold, and the water lags the air by weeks at this time of year, so read every number in the sixties as a beach for building on rather than swimming from.

The Lowest January Rates Are in the Coldest Towns

Of the 15 towns we could price for the last week of January, the six with the lowest rates are Gulf Shores, Destin, Ocean City, Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and Galveston. Not one of them is beach weather that week.

TownLate January nightLate January average highUsable beach?
Gulf Shores, AL$7461.1°FMild
Destin, FL$9363.1°FMild
Ocean City, MD$10244.6°FToo cold
Myrtle Beach, SC$10455.5°FCold
Virginia Beach, VA$11650.7°FCold
Galveston, TX$11963.2°FMild

Gulf Shores at $74 a night is the lowest rate anywhere in the index that week, and its average high is 61.1°F. Ocean City is $102 at 44.6°F. Those are real prices for real rooms, and a family booking on price alone would arrive to a beach with nobody on it for a reason. Our ranking of the most affordable family beach towns is built on the August week, when all 24 are warm, which is why its order looks nothing like this one.

⚠️ Parent Reality Check: A low January rate at a beach town is the town telling you its season is over. Read the temperature column before the price column. The cost index prints both side by side for exactly this reason.

What the Warm Towns Cost Across the Off-Season

Across the three off-peak weeks we price with the same method, both priced warm towns run the same way. Late October is the lowest, late January is higher, and the March break week is the highest. There are no exceptions in this set.

TownLate OctoberLate JanuaryMarch break
Key West, FL$319$387$437Check rates
Sanibel Island, FL$229$338$449Check rates

Key West moves $319 to $387 to $437 across the three weeks. Sanibel Island moves $229 to $338 to $449. In the towns that are warm in winter, winter is the season, so late January is a middle price rather than a bargain, and the March break week above it is the one to avoid if the dates can move. Our December list covers the same towns for the month before and explains why the two months rank differently.

Where the Other Ten Towns Land

Three towns are properly cold in late January and seven are below 45°F, with Mackinac Island averaging 24.0°F. None of these is a January beach trip and none is pretending to be. They are here so the table is complete.

What These Numbers Cannot Tell You

The priced week is January 23 to 30, 2027, a school week at the end of the month. It is not Martin Luther King weekend and it is not the Christmas break, both of which run higher in the warm towns. If you are booking either, take the ordering from here and get the actual price from the booking links.

The temperatures are average daytime air highs, not water temperatures. Seventy-one degrees in the air on the Gulf coast in late January is a warm afternoon and a cool sea, and the gap widens the further north a town sits. We hold no water-temperature data, so nothing here claims any.

This index covers the continental United States. Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are warmer than everything above, most of the pages that answer this question lead with them, and none of them are in our data. A reader whose real question is about those should not read this list as complete.

Warmth is one filter of several. If the deciding factor is flat water rather than temperature, our list of beach towns with calm water for toddlers sorts the same coast a different way. If it is getting around without a rental car, the walkable beach towns list covers that, and the wider family beach guide routes by whatever the trip actually needs.

How We Got These Numbers

The rates are 209 individual three-star nightly prices collected from Booking.com for January 23 to 30, 2027, filtered to hotels for two adults with vacation rentals and out-of-town listings removed. We publish the median for each town rather than the average, because one resort at four times the going rate would otherwise drag a whole town upward. The October and March columns come from the same method on their own weeks.

January temperatures are NOAA monthly normals, read from each town’s Wikipedia weather box where that box cites NOAA and straight from NOAA’s own 1991 to 2020 normals for the nearest station where it does not. Every town records which station its figure came from. Towns with no reporting station of their own read from a documented nearby one, so Sanibel Island uses Fort Myers and Ogunquit uses Portland.

Rates move and these are snapshots. What holds steadier than any single figure is the ordering, which is the part worth planning around. The full four-week picture for all 24 towns, including the summer week, is in the cost index.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warmest beach in the US in January?

Of the 24 coastal towns we price, Key West is the warmest in late January at an average daytime high of 75.8°F. Sanibel Island follows at 75.0°F and Siesta Key at 72.5°F. Hawaii and Puerto Rico are warmer still and sit outside this index.

Where is it warm enough to swim in January in the US?

On the mainland, south Florida and the Florida Gulf coast. Key West, Sanibel Island and Siesta Key all average 70°F or better in the air in the last week of January. Water lags the air, so treat Siesta Key at the bottom of that list as a warm afternoon rather than a swimming guarantee. Our Florida winter guide has NOAA sea temperatures for these towns, and only the Keys and the southeast coast keep the sea above 70°F in January.

Is Florida warm enough for the beach in January?

The southern half is. Key West, Sanibel Island and Siesta Key clear 70°F. Amelia Island on the Atlantic side of north Florida averages 63.3°F the same week, and Destin on the Panhandle is 63.1°F, so the state runs from swimming weather to sweater weather inside its own borders.

Where is the least expensive warm beach in the US in January?

Sanibel Island, at $338 a night for a median three-star room in the last week of January, the lowest of the two priced towns that average 70°F or better that week. Seven nights of lodging there works out to $2,366. Clearwater Beach is $254 at 69.8°F if a cool sea is acceptable.

Are US beach towns less expensive in January?

The cold ones are, and by a lot. The six lowest late-January rates in our index belong to Gulf Shores, Destin, Ocean City, Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and Galveston, and none of them averages 70°F that week. In the towns that do stay warm, late January costs more than late October and less than the March break week.
